Can I add multiple extensions to safety gate?

I have an opening which is 250cm wide, which needs to be zoned off to keep the cat away from my infant's play area. I looked at custom fit extra wide gate which is perfect in terms of size, but it has fabric mesh cover, which can be damaged easily by the cat's claws. So I'm wondering if the pressure-mount metal gate can be fixed with multiple extensions to cover the opening? Some of the gates recommended only 2 extensions be fitted onto the gates but some don't mention anything about it. Has anyone tried this method? Or will the extensions make the gate unstable and wobbly?
